Painting from Photos

In all my demos and workshops I often say painting from photos is the reason that the end result of so many artist paintings end up so mediocre. Well, that is the polite version. It usually comes out like this, "Photos are the reason you paint so bad." :) I'll try to outline my reasoning throughout this article. Composition First and foremost, most photos the average person takes are un-composed and shot on auto. Some make great snapshots but nothing really great to paint from. [...]

Greg Moore, Portrait of a Port Coquitlam Mayor

I recently finished my portrait of Greg Moore, the Mayor of Port Coquitlam, and had the opportunity to present it to him at the start of the first council meeting of 2015. The portrait came about when I met the Mayor during an exhibition I had with two other local artist in Leigh Square, Denise Maxwell and Catherine Dumaine, back in early 2014. While walking through Leigh Square with Greg that day we discussed the idea of his portrait and we made arrangements for a [...]

Opus :: By All Means Create

I was fortunate to be involved in an inspiration painting video series title, "By All Means Create" that Opus Art Supplies in producing. It's a series that covers discussions with various artists about how they deal with their inner critic. The concept is based on a quote by Vincent Van Gogh, "If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." We filmed at the Sapperton Landing Park, in New Westminster, [...]

Oil Painting Demo :: One painting with Many Lessons

This is an oil painting demo I recently painted for a group I regularly teach in Langley. The focus of the demo was to how to see and paint the subtleties of colour reflection in the planes of an object depending on which way a plane faces. In other words, if the plane of an object is facing up, the colour of that plane will be influenced by the reflection of colour above it. This is easier to see on a white object, which made [...]

Thumbnail Sketching

Within my workshops I try to emphasize that photos are one of the reason an artists painting is so bad. Photos darken the darks and lighten the lights, killing any interesting value scheme. In addition, photos over-saturate and under-saturate colour and do not properly show colour temperature. Using photos for reference is great, but don't use photos to paint from. So what does this have to do with thumbnail sketching? Planning. Starting artists think that just painting a photo onto a canvas makes it good. [...]
